Anthropic Will Get More Money from Amazon — But Only If It Does This
AI startup Anthropic is about to be worth a whole lot more.
According to The Information, Amazon is considering injecting several billion more into the startup. This investment would be Amazon’s third into Anthropic. The e-commerce giant struck a deal with the OpenAI rival in September of last year, committing to a maximum investment of $4 billion in exchange for a minority stake in Anthropic and that the startup continues using AWS. Amazon maxed out the $4 billion threshold in March this year.
Now, Amazon seems to be aiming for an even more influential stake in Anthropic. On top of the undisclosed billion-dollar deal amount, Amazon is asking Anthropic to make the switch from Nvidia chips to Amazon-developed, AWS-hosted silicon to train its AI. Anthropic has been open about its $2.7 billion burn rate and goals for a $30-40 billion valuation. So, this deal with Amazon could be the golden ticket for the startup to challenge OpenAI’s market dominance.
