EU Antitrust Watchdog Halts Nvidia’s Acquisition of Startup Run:ai
If ‘brat’ is Collins Dictionary’s Word of the Year, then the words ‘AI’ and ‘antitrust’ must come at a close second. However, unlike brat, AI and the antitrust scrutiny the sector has faced have not had a TikTok dance created for them (yet. There is still time).
Big Tech has been rocked by U.S. and EU governing bodies for its big investments in AI, particularly when it comes to acquiring startups’ tech and talent. The latest Big Tech entrant into antitrust investigation? Nvidia.
The European Commission halted the U.S.-based chipmaker on Oct. 31 after Italy flagged its plan to acquire AI workload management startup Run:ai. “The transaction threatens to significantly affect competition in the markets where NVIDIA and Run:ai are active, which are likely to be at least European Economic Area-wide and therefore include the referring country Italy,” the European Commission explained in a statement. Furthermore, though the deal was announced in April this year, the transaction does not meet the notification thresholds required under EU Merger Regulation law.
The next steps for Nvidia are to formally notify the transaction to EU competition enforcers with documentation outlining the details of the acquisition for assessment. Nvidia has agreed to comply with the EU’s requests. “We are happy to answer any questions regulators may have about Run:ai,” spokesperson John Rizzo responded. “After the acquisition closes, we’ll continue to make AI available in every cloud and enterprise, and help customers select any system and software solution that works best for them.”
⚡️ Community Poll ⚡️
Do you anticipate regulatory government agencies specifically focused on AI to be established in the coming years? |
Last week, 41% of respondents voted that AI has already become an essential technology employed by governments. 35% voted a definitive ‘Yes’ and 24% a definitive ‘No.’
